Early Life of Zakir Hussain

Zakir Hussain, one of the most celebrated table virtuous in the world, was born on March 9, 1951, in Mumbai, India. He was the son of the legendary table maestro Ustad Alla Rakha Qureshi, a pioneer in popularizing the table in both Indian classical music and on global stages. His mother, Bavi Begum, was a supportive presence who encouraged a nurturing environment for creativity and discipline. Zakir Hussain grew up in a musical household, deeply influenced by his father’s dedication to the art of tabla. As the eldest of his siblings, he often took on a guiding role for his younger brothers, Taufiq Qureshi and Fazal Qureshi, both of whom followed in their father’s footsteps and became accomplished musicians Taufiq, known for his innovative percussion techniques, and Fazal, a talented table Player, also contributed significantly to the world of Indian music. From a young age, Zakir Hussain displayed extraordinary talent and discipline, beginning his formal table training under his father’s tutelage.

Ustad Zakir Hussain Death

His family statement confirmed the death of the Zakir Hussain in a San Francisco hospital at 5:12 a.m. on Monday, citing complications from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis as the cause. He had been in the hospital for the past two weeks and was shifted to intensive care unit (ICU) on Sunday after his condition had deteriorated. Hussain’s sister Khurshid Aulia said he passed away “very peacefully”. He passed away very peacefully after the ventilation machine was switched off. This was 4 pm San Francisco time, she told.

Anisa graduated from UCLA and is a film maker. Isabella is studying dance in Manhattan. Hussain had two brothers, Taufiq Qureshi a percussionist, and Fazal Qureshi, also a tabla player. He was named an Old Dominion fellow by the Humanities council at Princeton University, where he resided for the 2005-2006 semester as full professor in the music department. He was also a visiting professor at Standford University.

The ‘Sexiest Man’ title

In 1994, Zakir Hussain was voted the “Sexiest man” by readers of the Indian magazine Gentleman, beating out prominent figures like Amitabh Bachchan. Reflecting on the surprise win, Zakir humorously recalled, “The magazine team was shocked when I won- They had expected Amitabh Bachchan to win”.
